HA2 Task 1 Glossary Of Terms

Heading 1 - Pixel and Resolution

Resolution is the detail in which a image has; either good or bad quality. in addition, higher resolution means a more detailed image. With resolution you can try and improve a images quality and with Resolution comes different types. Examples of this are
Pixel Resolution - this shows an image in different pixel resolutions e.g. 20 x 20, 5 x 5, 2 x 2.

Spatial Resolution - Refers to the umber of independent Pixel values per unit length. Basically, the measure of how closely lines can be resolved in an image is Spatial Resolution. Sometimes the more Pixels in an image can make a image look of more poorer quality.

Spectral Resolution - Images with color that distinguish light of different spectra. In contrast, multi-spectral images resolve even finer differences of spectrum or wavelength. Multis-pectral images have higher spectral resolution than just our ordinary color images.

Temporal Resolution - Filming cameras and even high speed cameras can view events at different times. Usually, the time resolution for movies for example is 24 to 48 frames per sec. However the high speed camera usually resolves at 50 to 300 frames per sec

Radiometric Resolution - This controls how finely a system can represent differences in intensity and this is usually expressed as a number of bits or levels. For example, 8 bits or 256 levels for computer image files.

Pixels are a physical point in a raster image - in digital imaging. In comparison, a pixel targets a very small area in a image meaning that very careful adjustments can be made when doing really small and delicate improvements to an image. Here are 2 examples.

LCD pixels are usually in a 2D grid meaning that they are often represented using dots or squares. However, CRT pixels work from their timing mechanisms and sweep rates.

Heading 2 - Vector and Raster Images

Raster images usually represent rectangular grids of pixels or points of color. Raster images are. Basically Raster allows you to look closely at a image to analyse it. Raster image is also known a Bitmap and is technically characterized by the width and height of the image in pixels and by the number of bits per pixel. Here is a example of a Raster Image.

File:Rgb-raster-image.svg

Vector's - are based on paths or strokes which lead through locations e.g. locations of an image. These are known as control points. Each of the points also have a confirmed position on the X AND Y axis of the work plan. Each point will tell the user which way the Vector is pointing and the location of a point in the work space. All this defines the direction of the track. Lastly, each track can be assigned to a color a fill or even a shape or thickness. Here is a example of what it does.

File Formats And Uses.

A file format is a standard way that information is encoded for storage in a computer file. File formats can be used in many different ways when it comes to encoding for storage.  Examples of this are,

Ogg -  is used as a container for different types of multimedia (video or audio)
Tiff -  is used for storing images (tagging image file format)
Psd - used for storing Photoshop file format work, images text.
Bmp - known as Bitmap file format is a raster image file format used to store Bitmap digital images. This is capable of storing 2d digital images even when resolution in a image has been hanged. Even when color is modified it still has the capability of storing a image.
Png - known as portable network graphics, is a raster graphic file format that supports lossless data compression.  This is most common compression file format  used to store lossless images from the internet.

HA2 Task 3 - Graphic Types

Create a report that explores these five different types of computer game graphics:

PIXEL ART
CONCEPT ART
TEXTURE ART
BACKGROUND GRAPHICS
PRINT MEDIA ART

Choose a wide range of examples and remember that you are trying to describe and explain your findings. Illustrate as required and remember to cite any sources you have used in your research, both written and visual.

Pixel Art

This is a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software. Pixel art can be both 2D and 3D. Pixel art used 2D far more times than 3D as 2D was seen as easier. However it seems now that 3D is being used more frequently due to better and improved raster software's. Many video games used to use 2D graphics such as Capcom's street fighter and even the game PacMan. However after the PS2, 2D graphics for video games started to fade all the more and eventually every games from them included 3D such as LA Noire. In addition, Pixel art is used in many different things from, consoles, graphic calculators and even mobile phone video games. In fact, Pixel art today is even more popular as more electronic technology is being developed.

Concept Art

This is a form of illustration in which we will create a visual representation of a design such as a drawing, idea, story line either for a film, comic book, game e.c.t. before putting the final piece of work into a final product. This basically means to come up with an idea and improve it, tweak it to see if there's anything else in which can be done to improve it. Concept art can be used to create a background for a comic, weapons to be used in a game, characters to be used in a film e.c.t. Concept artist usually work in sections at a time e.g.
1- they will create a few quick sketches in which each look different.
2 - they will add shading and refinement to each different sketch
3 - then they will choose one in which they think has the bets design
4 - then they will use 3D modelling ( by computer)
5 - lastly, they will start refining the 3D model.
Concept art is all about visually developing a piece of art and choosing the one you see as the most inspiring piece.

Texture Art

Texture artist basically develop textures for digital media e.g. they will create certain textures for video games or movies. These textures can be in the for of 2D or 3D. Usually, texture artist use  a polygon mesh to give a realistic 3D model. Texture art is used on TV shows and even websites as well as video games and movies. Textures can be added to any computer graphic such as grass, clothing of characters and even vehicles e.c.t. Minecraft uses different texture packs from natural type to plastic type and to even a Halloween type texture. An example of texture art could be the drawing and painting of a rock..... a rock usually feels smooth and is obviously hard. A painter would create the illusions of the rock's qualities through the use of color, line and shape.

Background Graphics

Background graphics are very important when it comes to film making and video game creating. Background graphics also determine a setting of a film or game e.g. a city or a desert island. Background graphics can be made up from various techniques such as vector graphics. Background graphics are all very different depending on the style of the game e.g. there is a big difference between the background graphics on GTA5 than on Minecraft. Background graphics also hold different textures and different pixel rates in which will determine the performance of the background graphics.

Print Media Art

This is used very often in this day and age as print media is used to form magazines and CD front covers. Print media has been around for hundreds of years in different styles. Print media is actually growing as when more creations will boost up print media as print media will be used to advertise new products

HA2 Task 2 – Artistic Styles

Create a report that explores these four different artistic styles found in games:

PHOTO REALISM /
CELL SHADING
ABSTRACTION
EXAGGERATION

Choose a wide range of examples and remember that you are trying to describe and explain your findings. Illustrate as required and remember to cite any sources you have used in your research, both written and visual.

Photo Realism

Photo realism is the genre of painting, based on using cameras and photographs to gather visual information and then generate from this a painting that appears to be truly realistic. In addition photo realism has been around from the early 1960's. Photo realism is used on many video games such as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption. The photo realism effect works really well with video games as it makes characters look realistic making the game have a better effect on players. In addition, through photo realism characters are better as it gives them a better effect when doing actions, battling e.c.t.

Many artist decide to follow the photo realism movements as they are attracted with the way pieces look. In 2007, John Baeder and John Chevelle used photo realism in which gave birth to a very popular piece of art
In the 1960's, Chuck Close was one of the most successful people to use photo realism. He created magnificent pieces and from his work; he made photo realism even bigger as more artist then started using it.
Don Eddy is also a very successful photo realism artist has has produced great pieces over the years.

                                                    John Baeder, John Chevelle

                                                                  Chuck Close

                                                                    Don Eddy

From chuck close and other photo realism artist such as Don Eddy, photo realism is now used in games to portray characters. One of the best uses of photo realism is in Rock stars game Gta 5.

Photo realism is known to really improve characters in games as they can have detailed facial features and expression s so you know when they are angry or happy e.c.t. LA Noire another game created by Rock star  was also known for its fantastic use of photo realism.

Another game in which uses photo realism to its great advantage is Call Of duty black ops 2. This Call Of Duty is known to have the best use of photo realism from any other Call Of Duties. Most games in which come out now use photo realism in some way like wise Mafia 2, Red Dead Redemption and even The Walking Dead Survival Instincts.

Cel Shading

This is a type of non photo realistic rendering  designed to make 3D computer graphics appear to be flat. Cel shading is often used to mimic the style of a comic book or cartoon. anouther type of cel shading is toon shading. Also there is a plastic shading.

File:Toon-shader.jpg

Many game designers decide to use cel shading in their games. They seemed to like the different effects cel shading portrayed. Cel shading got its start with the jet set radio in 2000 for the SEGA Dreamcast. However, only a  few games use Cel shading today. In addition Borderlands (the game) used this style type graphic

Exaggeration

This means to represent something in an excessive manner. Exaggeration is used all the time and everyone uses it. Many artist for example draw exaggerated images and many books use exaggerated language in them. It is this exaggeration in which attracts people towards it. This style exaggeration is also used in many different games today. An example game to support this super smash bros 2. In this game battling enemies is exaggerated e.g. punches look overpowering as well as other fight moves and power ups.

This style exaggeration defines real life events such as battles and turns it in to a more overpowering , unrealistic manner to make it more enjoyable and addicting to gamer's.
