HA3 Task 1 - Game Setting Research


TASK 1

My story will be based under a survival horror. I have decided to follow the idea of a story-line for a game,  based around a zombie apocalypse. I chose this particular story as it holds many different ideas for me to portray in this piece of work. Also, I have been highly inspired by the features of a zombie apocalypse from watching a TV series called The Walking Dead. This is based in the USA; some parts are based in the city of Atlanta and some parts are based in the country side e.g a farm. Furthermore, it seems as if nowhere is safe, but that the city is more dangerous as more zombies seem to be there. From this, I think I will base this game in the city to make it more of a challenge for players. Also, cities hold supplies such as Gun stores, Hospitals and Food stores, meaning that in the game you can find food, heal yourself and even get weapons to protect yourself from the living dead. In contrast, DIY stores will be included so your player can use melee attack as well as fire arms. The Walking Dead also portrays the damage on the city as you can see tanks in the street and buildings burnt. This also shows that the Army tried fighting the zombies but failed. This tells us that the zombies are really hard to defeat as there are thousands and thousands of them. Basically the city looks horrific e.g. dead people on the floor and cars smashed up; it looks like it has been a battlefield.

I Am Legend, the film, has also inspired me as the whole story is based in the city. From watching it, it shown me that the whole city was dead as big animals started living in the city such as deer's. You can also see the streets being overrun with grass meaning the city has been totally abandoned as every body must have fell ill except from a few people.

The Walking Dead comics hold a different story to The Walking Dead TV series as there are different characters and different things that take place; but we still see that the city is very dangerous. An example of this is, in the comics they stop off at the city to sleep in an old building for the night. The place seems very quite and abandoned when over 50 zombies come stumbling out of all the buildings around it. From This they lost a survivor. This tells us that you may think the city is safer, but it is not.

Fallout 3, the game, also gives me ideas for my scenery considering that i could use some ideas from this and place them in the game. E.g. the damaged buildings the hideouts of survivors and the abandoned huts in the the outer city e.g. the woods. I may also include some survivors in which try and kill you.

However, In the game, the city outskirts will be included for you to explore e.g. farms and woodland. Survivors either dangerous or good will be included as well as small country stores and abandoned houses and even camp sights. This will attract the gamer's all the more considering it's not all just based in the city. However,  Near the end of the game when you leave the city; you will be aiming to get to a certain part of the outskirts which is where John used to live.




The Weapons I would like to be included in this game are fire arms and melee weapons. However, I have decided to bring in the idea that sound attracts the zombies like wise The Walking Dead Comics/TV Series. This means that melee weapons also have an added bonus which is keeping things quite. Here are Some examples of some melee weapons I may include.












Fire arms however, are really reasonable in an apocalypse but they run out of ammo. An advantage about a fire arm is that you don't have to get close to a zombie to kill it as you can fire at it from a range. Here are some examples of fire arms I may include in the game.




































Considering that this game will be based 6 months into a zombie apocalypse, I think it would look more realistic if the clothes of characters were to look dirty and damaged. This will all the more indicate that the apocalypse is very controlling and that it has tested the human race into a survival of the fittest. In The Walking Dead we see the outfits looking wrecked e.g. muddy, bloody and sweaty. Also the characters body could look dirty and damaged e.g. dirt on the skin with cuts and scars.
